Hazardous Waste Regulations – July 16th 2005
These regulations became law on 16th July 2005, reclassifying many wastes previously classified as Special Wastes.
All companies producing over 200 Kgs of Hazardous waste now have to register annually with the Environmental Agency. www.environmental-agency.gov.uk
It will be an offence to collect Hazardous Waste from any site, if that site has not registered or has been classified as exempt.
- To check if your waste is hazardous – go to Environmental website above – see European Waste Catalogue (EWC).
- Companies with multi sites need to register each site individually.
- All Hazardous wastes have to be separated from non-hazardous and it is illegal to mix these waste streams.
- All Hazardous wastes must be stored safely in correct containers
- The Environmental Agency have a statutory duty to inspect sites producing Hazardous wastes
- Items such as fluorescent tubes, TV’s, P.C. Monitors, Batteries, All contaminated media, mastics, glues, solvent based paints, aerosols, fridges, tyres are now hazardous waste. Again for a full listing of Hazardous waste streams, visit the environmental website above.
- Consignment Notes must contain EWC Code for each Waste type, SIC (Standard Industry Code) –available from Companies House, Postcodes and your premises notification code and note number.
Exceptions
For a full listing of exceptions to the above, please refer to the Environmental Agency information, but include:
- Companies producing less than 200 Kgs of Hazardous Waste per annum including:
- Agricultural premises
- Shops and office premises
- Dental and Veterinary
- Medical
- Ships
200 Kgs is defined as:- 10 small T.V`s/ 500 Fluorescent Tubes/5 Fridges
